Thomas Hancock... You Will Be Missed

Today we lost another amazing life far too young with potential unrealized... Thomas Hancock was one of my closest friends, someone I had logged literally 1000's of roadtrip miles with and if you've ever crossed the state of Texas with someone more than once, you know each other. We had, we did.

We once coasted close to 100 miles on a desolate Utah highway with the low fuel light on and somehow willing the fumes to last until we found gas... Good times and great memories.

You will be missed Thomas...

Our condolences and prayers go out to Thomas' family.

Since the day we stopped producing Mobs with S&M getting an American Made frame had become my quest. I had no idea the issues I would face in having frames made here versus Taiwan other than price and material availability.

Everything from builders wanting $400.00+ to weld a frame, to incorrect angles and mis-aligned frames or just not returning phone calls for months. What's the deal with manufacturing here? Why is it so difficult to do here, what gets done overseas in days... and done correctly the first time? The U.S.A. was good at this shit at one point... Henry Ford wrote the book on manufacturing didn't he?

That's what I miss about S&M... Chris and Jason have built a manufacturing shop in the states that can build quality straight and true frames the first time. Props to them for that...

So, after literally years of trying to find a frame builder in the US that I could count on for the following:

A. Getting material when needed

B. A builder who can build straight and true frames consistently

C. Reasonable cost

D. Availability

... I'm stoked I finally have some real progress in my quest...

It's been a bit since my last blog post thanks to having Benny Phillips in town, followed by the SF Expo, the South Ridge Challenge, Roam testing and development and house painting so here's a quick update.

While Benny was here we went to Woodward for a few days so he could train for the SF Expo but thanks to shit weather we were relegated to the Hanger for 2 days. To make things worse the Hanger hadn't been mopped in weeks so the dust was gnarly and traction was pretty much non-existent. To the point where as I was pedaling hard at the big hip my front wheel washed out 10' before the lip sending me sliding on my back all the way up the 4' lip and back down.

Benny was having his own issues with the dust, taking it hard twice on a 3 double-down whip when he should have ridden away but washed out totally unexpectedly... not fun. Still looking for photos from this trip as the card is missing.

The following weekend was the trip to SF for AT's Showdown and the SF Bike Expo... Suzie and I packed up a U-Haul full of BlkMrkt goodies and

SF Expo day 1 at the booth. Thanks to Rob from Calabazas Cyclery who came down to help Suzie and I out... He also brought some cool custom builds including a sweet all purple Malice and a Boss 24" with Tuff II's.

Double back... sort of.

Local fgfs ripper took 3rd in Am out of 40 riders on his Molly Hatchet's and picked up a spare on his way out. Good job riding... I'm checking your edit...

Who: MTB riders of all ages that want to come and enjoy a fun filled weekend of riding at Woodward West. Riders under 18 years of age must be accompanied but parent the entire weekend.    

What: A chance to enjoy MTB facilities including The Hill, trails and indoor riding area, ride with friends and visiting pros.

I'm stoked to say that so far we've had no issues with the new Roam protos that arrived the day before Interbike. Adam and I had a chance to get in a few good rides before he headed back to Jersey and now we'll just continue riding the poop out of them every chance we get.

While Mondo, Adam, Suzie and I were at Interbike in Vegas, Jake Kinney was busy getting steezy as fuck at this year's Fam Jam in Folsom, Ca.. Jake went out there on behalf of BlkMrkt and Woodward West and threw down. 40+ 26" riders showed up and made for a real deep talent pool to make the finals.

Jake ended up taking Best Whip honors and 2nd overall behind Paul Basagoitia and having a great time in the process...

I'm happy to announce the addition of Detroit's Will Gibbons to the Black Market Family. Mr. Gibbons will be riding fixed for Black Market and since I really don't know my ass from my elbow about the fixed gear scene I decided to look for someone who knows the scene to more or less be the face of Black Market Fixed (B.M.F.)... that person is Will.

Martin Knorr from PlusSizeBMX has been riding a Contraband for quite some time now, and he just released his full review and bike check. As seen on www.PlusSizeBMX.com

About the frame:

- the frame has super short 365mm chainstays

- neutral bb height with a 430mm a2c fork

- the only 24" specific frame available in 2 toptube sizes: 21.5" and 22"

- super low seattube for a lot of clearance for tricks: makes the bike easily
turndown-able and gives you more clearance to pull your bike up higher or
gives you more feel clearance for tricks like cancans and tailwhips.

- 2.5kg. It's not extremely light, but it's not heavy aswell. It's a bit heavier
than the latest superlight-trendy frames are, but it's also a lot stronger.
Also a good geometry is way more important than the weight of a frame:
an extremely light frame with a bad geometry will feel heavy while riding,
while a heavy frame with a good geometry will feel light during the ride.

- retail price: 399.99 USD

Some more specs:

The guys at Black Market Bikes definitely had a good thought about every single
small detail in this frame. The integrated headset is light and very easy to install.
The frame has an integrated seatpost, which has some nice features aswell:

First of all the part of the seattube on top is very low, which looks nice,
saves weight, and gives you the opportunity to slam your seat even more.

Second of all they didn't put any thread in it, but you can put a bolt in the other side,
so if the thread dies you don't have to replace your whole frame.
Exactly the same is done at the bb. The frame has a mid bb, which means
you don't have any thread in the bb-shell which could die. Small but clever details
like this prevent your frame from becoming useless.

Next to that there are all the details to create the total 'pimp-factor:'
The gusset underneat the headtube has written 'BLKMRKT' into it,
and the dropouts are very small and clean, and have nice lasercuts in it.
It looks great and it shaves off all unnecessary weight.

While riding:

First of all I loved how this frame is also available in a 22" toptube length.
It seemed impossible to find a frame with a chainstay length under the
370mm with a longer toptube than 21.5". The possibility of getting this
frame with a longer toptube makes it great for taller riders like me.

The 365mm chainstays are really short and I love it! It makes the bike
so easy to throw around. This makes manuals, hops and spins very easy:
it's really flickable!

But only a flickable frame is nothing special in my opinion. I had several
flickable frames before, but the Contraband has another riding feature I love:
even tho it's really flickable, it still feels stable while going big: airing
quarterpipes and riding dirts feel dialed on this bike. I never owned or rode
a frame before which was good at both: those bikes were flickable and unstable,
or stable and not flickable. This makes the frame great for street AND dirt,
and not only for one of those. I love how the Contraband feels and handles while riding.

Is it strong?

The strength of a frame is very important.
So how is the Black Market Contraband holding out?

For the last three-quarter of a year I have been doing all I can to tear the
hell out of this frame. Not only on the streets (as me being a street rider),
but I took it everywhere: skateparks, dirts, even rode a DH race with it
(..please get yourself a DH bike if you ride DH lol..),
took it to Bikepark Winterberg where the suspension fork died on me,
hit many high drops and big gaps, and had some bad crashes,
but I was unable to break or bend any part of the frame.
So I can confirm that the Contraband frame really is strong.

Long story short:

- The Black Market Contraband feels really flickable for street,
but also still stable in the air for dirt and park.

- The 22" toptube option is perfect for riders over +-183cm
who want to rock a decent 24" bike.

- The frame is definitely strong

- In my honest opinion this is the best (/ my favourite)
24" specific frame on the market.
I actually turned down 2 sponsor offers because I didn't
wanna ride any other frame, I think that says enough :)

I few months ago, I was looking for someone to ride the Street Fiend proto and I wondered into the Long Beach, City Grounds bike shop and that's where I found Steven... or should I say, he found us...

I was talking to the manager and turned around to see Steven, who is a pretty big kid with a dirty baseball hat on kind of crooked and dirty pink Crocs with feet drawn on them in gold paint marker, talking to Suzie about "her" bike. She was riding the small red fixed Street Fiend proto with 26" Atomlab rims and 2.1" tires. Steven was already asking to take it for test ride... he was amped on the bike because he was coming into fgfs from BMX and found fixed frame geometry pretty wack for the most part...

I wasn't expecting much from this big ass dude in pink Crocs, no socks on a fixie with toe straps but Steven immediately threw a hop-bar with 29" Molly's while still getting his toe straps to fit his Barney Rubble looking cartooned Crocs. As he was getting used to the bike in the middle of Main st. downtown

Long Beach, he did a high speed 180 to slider but he over-cooked it a bit and it spun him super fast to where his foot popped out of his toe strapped in Croc and slapped his barefoot flat to the hot pavement with a pop! He still continued to ride for another 15 minutes...

I was sold on having Steven test the Street Fiend.

Long way to get to this... but Steven's been working on this edit and released a short one in the mean time but to tell you the truth, I'm not sure this one's done yet either but it's full of good riding so enjoy and we'll have to help Steven with his edit endings...

Black Market has long been one of the most popular hardtail brands within the dirt jump, street, park, and slopestyle scenes. They first made the move into the full suspension game with their slopestyle frame dubbed the Killswitch - several riders were rocking it at Colorado Crankworx, including Justin Wyper and Conor Mcfarlane. Then late last year they announced an all-mountain frame called the Roam. Even though it's classified as an all mountain bike, we know this machine is capable of much more. Recently we saw Carter Holland launch it off the huge step-up at Woodard West and take 3rd in the Crankworx Colorado Air DH.

The Roam is getting ready to go into final production and should be available soon. They've made a few tweaks since the initial version that you should be aware of:

As seen in the images below, the top tube is losing most of its curves, which will have the biggest visual impact on the frame. Instead of the top tube making two bends, it will now go straight from the headtube to the seat tube, with a curved tube providing strength between the two. This change does not impact standover hegith and will provide even more rigidity and strength.

Black Market Roam Production Changes

The original version provided 5.7" of travel via Black Market's Hammer Link suspension system. The final version will have 4.3 or 6.3" of travel using the included "Shock Shuttle." This will make it a bit more fun on the downhills and a bit more enjoyable on XC rides or major climbs on epic adventures.

Also new are the mechanical sliding dropouts. You simply loosen two bolts on each side and use an allen wrench to adjust the drops horizontal position. This allows for a wide range of setup options.

The events are over and the rain has started but it was a good weekend... Unfortunately none of the Black Market riders made the Super Finals though we did have a few shining moments for sure. Justin Wyper was riding well but couldn't put it all together. Our New Zealand shredder Conor McFarlane rode very solid and was the ONLY rider to truely trick the high speed berm to berm thingy by some how he was able to 3... It was fast & gnar!!!!

Reece Wallace did well on his polished Killswitch and Kevin Sorchetti also rode well but had a hard time putting together a complete run with his very limited experience at big contests...
Look for Kevin & Conor to be killin' shit soon.

On a better note, I managed a 3rd place finish in the Air DH on my extra small Roam prototype... man, I can't wait until Aug. 31... hint, hint.

This is going into the last turn after about 3:30.... my lungs are burning from the 11,000' altitude...

Thanks goes out to Winter Park Trail Crew Member Pauly Weston who showed me the way down the mountain at Mach Speed but gave me the confidence to run a good lap even after showing up with a front flat and missing all of practice. No way I could have even come close to that time with out his help.

We're headed for Moab!!!!! But first we're stopping in to Santiago's sweet new store... A Culture Of Speed A.K.A. aCOS in Dumont, Co. then to the Fix and Valmont bike park.

Bike issues kept me from racing dual but I've got my Roam dialed from tomorrow's Air DH and even got in some fast laps thanks to local trail crew member Paulie. Thanks Paul... I've never gone that fast on a new trail and hit everything right. It pays to follow the right guy but 10,000' still hurts the lungs plenty.

Orchard Trails with Plussizebmx.com

I've been trying to make it down to Danny Daffer's place in San Diego for at least 2 years now and today i finally make it happen. Suzie and I drove in hellish 30mph 5 South traffic for over 2 and half hours but it was well worth it once we got there.

Danny's Orchard trails are small to medium sized with 3-4' steep lips and stepped up landings that start in his backyard with some pump track sized and style rollers and a table to get you started. Once in the pack you have 2 choices... the straight line consists of 3 sets into a 90 berm to pump bump to small step up( watch out for trees ). The other choice is to hip left after the first set the a bigger hip deep in the orange trees to a final small step-up... both lines terminate in the same 135* berm that serves a small pump track/warm-up section.

Quite a few of the Orchard locals came out to ride and Chris from plussizebmx.com was there shooting photos and grilling various meats. Danny and his other half, Leslie showed Lisa Myklak and I the hotlines

around the yard while locals Jimmy Visser, Timmy Gooden and Kevin Sorchetti were spinnin' and flippin'

about the place. It didn't hurt that the Crankworx Super Finals were going on line in the living room whenever we needed a break.

The sculpter/ resident shredder, Danny Daffer gets all kinds of flat on his rigid SuperCo.

While his other half, Leslis Slagle throws her Mob around the yard. Different strokes for different folks...

I had a great time flowing around and was throwing some clicked turndowns on this hit when my one secure foot blew... it all went horribly wrong taking a rather large deep chunk out of my palm. Good times...

Kevin Sorchetti had the place dialed and was killing it. Look for him, Adam and me at Crankworx Colorado next week too.

Lisa drove in from Barstow where she was visiting her sister with A. No helmet and B. No bike...

Do you think it phased her to ride new trails on a new bike ( the first production Mob to roll off the line in over 2 years) in a new helmet??? Nope... not a bit.

On a side note, I'd like to officially congratulate Jim Tharp and Lisa Myklak on their recent engagement and wish them all the best in their future together. So stoked to have you both riding for us.

Lisa, Suzie and I had a great time riding and visiting with everyone... I was specially happy to see Danny Meadows show up to hang out. For those who don't know, Danny Meadows is a long time SD BMX scene member who also had a backyard BMX playground that was always open to friends and new riders. He was also the track director at the new Olympic BMX training center and BMX track in Chula Vista, Ca. Danny was recently diagnosed with multiple scleorsis and is no longer able to ride a bike but with the help of Stephan Murray's Stay Strong Foundation he may soon have his very own full suspension dh wheelchair to fly on. Can't wait to see that...

Day#4! It was an action packed day. A group went up in the morning with Aaron Chase and Adam Hauck and learned how to dig and reshape a trick jump. Then they sessioned it and learned some new tricks. The other group went up the lift with Slim and Geoff Gullevich and raged some downhill runs! Then at the end of the day everyone met up at the HTC and had an editing lesson from Justin at Lucent Prod. After all that some bike rope-swinging and dodgeball was in order!

Day #5 was an epic day for campers. Right after breakfast they got on the hill and lapped some early morning downhill runs. Then midday the campers and coaches began the hike up the slope style course. The rest is history! Check out the footage below!

Day #6 marked the second to last day of camp for the campers. They were all rip roar’n ready to go bright and early. The majority of the day was spent on the lift. The kids had been slaying jumps all weeks with no problem and had even stepped it up to the freebird; but they wanted to get more drops in so they spent the majority of the day sessioning the bigger drops on the mountain. By mid day with the instruction of the coaches they were flowing off all the biggest drops on the mountain with style!

Here's a new web edit from Lisa Myklak and Jim Tharp's recent road trip to the front range of Colorado.

Lots of great characters and riding. Specially love the section on Jared Fisher who suffered a broken leg that was broken so badly that after a year and half of surgeries and therapy Jared decided to have it amputated... 7 weeks later he's shredding the opening of Valmont bike park. That's gnarly but he's finally able to ride again... Look for Jared to be shredding his own Killswitch in the near future.

I just recently returned from a week trip to Woodward to council/instruct with the MTB campers, and it couldn't have been more fun! As most of you know, our very own, Jake Kinney is the MTB director at camp, and the two of us teamed up to get these kids shredding. After only a few hours on the first day, these kids were tearing down the DH/slope course, and nothing could stop them. I managed to snag a couple shots when I wasn't working, and look for more to come.

乗った感じではいけそうな感じでした！当分はこのまま試すと思います。

フロントのタイヤクリアランスです！700ｃ×47ｃ（実測44ｃぐらい）でこの感じです！

いっぱいまで詰めるとタイヤが当たります。

バースピンクリアランスです。改善されてます！バースピン普通にできます！！

奥村君がバニーホップバースピンして足に当たる事はなかったです。（これには二人でかなりテンション上がりました）

まだあまり乗れてないので乗った感じのレポは奥村君がしてくれると思います。

ただこの日乗った感じでは相当調子良さそうです！！あとは強度ですね！

とにかく何より見た目がかっこよすぎて組みながらかなりテンション上がりました。

While I'm aware some of you don't like the fixie scene, but... everyone's got their opinion. I'm just stoked to see more people riding and Freestylin' any type of bike and we'll continue to support riders from all rides of life with quality Black Market projects when it fits into what we're doing...

Don't forget where this all stems from... Dudes in neon glasses with fannypacks, berets and goofy pants hoping up and down on fold-down pegs. Shit's gotta start somewhere in order for it to grow and develop into something... kind of like Freeriding...

The other day, Kevin Sorichetti and myself were asked to go shoot a photo to be used in the window of our local shop. The only issue is, they don't sell 26's, so, we ended up shooting a BMX pic. Never the less, Kevin produce a huge flair with a little table in there. Enjoy!
